Travel writer and photographer Etain O'Carroll has been working as a freelancer for over 10 years and has authored Lonely Planet guidebooks to Greenland & the Arctic, Iceland, Ireland, England, Wales, Morocco, Indonesia and Germany.
Etain has spent the last ten years jumping on and off planes, kipping in tents in sub zero temperatures, hitchhiking across Eastern Europe, dicing with death on dodgy buses across South America and sleeping under the jungle stars. Etain now lives in Oxford and continues to work as a Lonely Planet author and a freelance writer and photographer for a variety of publications.

been plagued by itchy feet from an early age and began my career taking photographs
as I travelled around the world. By pitching stories complete with photographs
I found it easier to wheedle my way into an editor’s heart. I’ve
been lucky enough to see some amazing things in my travels but my lasting
love has to be for the Arctic and the incredible people and landscapes of
the polar world.
The
vicious storms, eternal nights, bitter temperatures and eerie landscapes make
any journey north a trip of a lifetime. It’s difficult to explain just
how the vast landscape of the arctic makes you feel. The windswept ice and
snow stretch for hundreds of miles in every direction, the snow scratching
and scurrying along the groaning ice and the howling wind sculpting the snow
and ice into beautiful angular shapes. It is Nunassiaq - the beautiful land.”
